5 ways to beat the heat and stay active

The #1 way to stay cool and get some exercise is to find air conditioned work out zones. However, If you are like me, you prefer fresh air and nature. Let's be honest walking on a treadmill is soooo boring!! Here are a few ideas to get your fresh air fix and stay cool.

  1. Swim. Even if you don't like to swim walking or trying to run in water is a great workout. The water provides resistance, lessens impact on your joints and keeps you cool. If you wear a hat you can get your hat wet to further the cooling effect.

  2. Go for your walks early in the morning before the sun heats up the day. Maybe you have to change your morning routine a little but it's worth it. You might find you enjoy this practice and keep it going beyond the summer months.

  3. Go Up! Higher elevations are cooler. If you live near mountains there are usually trails in the higher elevations that are forested and follow creeks. All three of these bring the temperature down. Try your local ski hill, snowshoe or cross country ski trails. They look so different in the summer and the drive to get there is a wonderful bonus.

  4. No Mountains? Most communities have forested trails that follow creeks. The shade and the cool water bring temps down and you can dip your toes, hat, cooling neck scarf into the creek to cool off. Bring a friend or two and have a picnic while you're out. Exercise can be fun!!

  5. Air Conditioning. I know I said this is not my preference but it is the most convenient. If you find this boring you can amp the energy by inviting friends. This strategy can benefit you in more ways than just beating the heat. The added bonus is you are creating a support team where you can encourage each other in your fitness goals. This is also an activity that can be enjoyed 12 months of the year, creating a solid habit for movement or exercise. Whatever you decide to do make sure you stay safe. Wear a hat, wear sunscreen, drink lots of water and replenish your electrolytes if you are sweating a lot. Staying active might require a slight change of your regular routine but it is worth it. You never know maybe you'll find a new activity that you love.
